Southwest Security Association (SSA)

SSA logoThe several organizations which became the Southwest Security Association (SSA) were organized by citizens of Meyerland, Marilyn Estates, Barkley Square and Barkley Circle in 1982 following several years of very high levels of crime. By 1983, the Meyerland Security Association and Constable Precinct 5 successfully decreased crime in Meyerland (measured by house burglaries) by about 75 percent compared to 1980 and 1981. By 198,7 five subdivisions - 3,750 homes - were protected by nine deputy constables under Constable Steve Radack (now Glen Cheek).

In 2005 four subdivisions are members of the Southwest Security Association and seven deputies patrol the 3,200 homes. Normally there are two deputies on a shift. Response time to emergency calls has decreased to 2–4 minutes for 90 percent of these calls. This compares with 15 – 20 minutes and frequently longer for the overworked and understaffed Houston Police Department. The high visibility of SWSA/Precinct 5 Deputies discourages most criminals from entering the area.

One of the most popular features of the Security Program is the Vacation Watch Program by the deputies. Members should call the Dispatcher at 281-463-6666 five days before departure for a Vacation Watch. As an example of the effectiveness of this program, in 2004 deputies checked homes 6,700 times while owners were away. By 1996 crime, compared to 1979-81, had decreased more than 97 percent. Today it continues at that low level. Crime in nearby subdivisions that do not have a security program is 50 to 100 times what we experience.

SWSA is a non-profit membership organization. In 2004 all 22 Meyerland Section deed restrictions were amended by the owners to make the Security Assessment mandatory.

In 2005 Meyerland property owners received bills that included the Security Assessment. In the opinion of several respected police officials, Precinct 5 Deputy Constables are the best trained police officers in Texas. Also the screening process for applicants is one of the strictest of the hundreds of police departments in the state. Law enforcement officials believe that without this program, crime could increase by a factor of 50 times the present level.

The Southwest Security Association welcomes you to Meyerland and to membership in our top-rated crime prevention organization.
