E-Mail System Upgrade

October 12, 2009

We will be upgrading the system that controls the MCIA News and Security E-mail List this Friday, October 16th. As part of this upgrade, current subscribers will need to "opt-in" their e-mail address again. Subscribers will receive an e-mail on Friday evening asking them to activate their membership in the MCIA e-mail list. Subscribers MUST click the link enclosed in that e-mail in order to continue receiving news and security alerts from the MCIA office.

Why is MCIA changing the e-mail list system?

We currently have over 1,000 subscribers, and we need a more robust system. Our new system will be more reliable and deliver e-mail messages faster and with more accuracy. We currently have problems with some internet service providers that think MCIA e-mails are spam. We won't have that problem with our new system.

Didn't We Just Do An Upgrade?

Yes, we upgraded our system a few months ago, but unfortunately it did not provide the stability we had hoped. We are moving to an entirely new system that is proven within the industry.

Why do I need to opt-in again when I already opted-in with the current system?

The opt-in process is necessary to comply with anti-spam laws. Since we are changing service providers, we need to provide new proof that MCIA has permission from its subscribers to send them e-mails.

What happens with my e-mail address in the old system?

Data from our old system will be permanently deleted. It is MCIA's privacy policy that we NEVER sell e-mail addresses or use it for anything other than news and security alerts.

What if I want to receive news and security alerts at a different e-mail address?

You can ignore the opt-in e-mail message that will be delivered to your old address. After Friday, October 16th, go to the MCIA website, www.meyerland.net, and sign-up with your new address on the home page.

I don't trust e-mails to activate anything. What is my other option?

Ignore the opt-in e-mail message. You can re-subscribe directly from the Meyerland web site, www.meyerland.net, after Friday, October 16th 10:00 PM Central Time. The sign-up form is on the home page.

Volunteers Needed for Citizen Patrol Program

ImageMeyerland is seeking volunteers to launch a Citizen Patrol program. This HPD program is a means for citizens to organize as groups and patrol the neighborhood. They act as another set of eyes and ears for law enforcement officers. The Citizens on Patrol program provide an effective method of discouraging neighborhood crime, promte a friendly and safter neighborhood environment, and improve communication among neighbors.

The time commitment for being a volunteer is a few hours per month. Volunteers must be 18 years or older, have a Texas driver's license, pass a background check, and go through training with the Houston Police department.

If you are interested, please contact Meyerland resident Jerry Goldman at jerryg112@aol.com. Read more about the Citizen Patrol program on the City of Houston's web site at http://www.houstontx.gov/police/vip/vip_citzpatrol.htm.

New Automated Recycling Pilot Program

ImageMeyerland has been selected to participate in the City of Houston's Automated Recycling Pilot Program. 2,284 of our 2,310 homes in Meyerland will receive new 96-gallon waste bins from the City of Houston.

The pilot area is in the boundary of Beechnut to 610, 610 to West Bellfort, Willowbend to Chimney Rock and Chimney Rock to Beechnut. The old recycle bins were picked up this week. The new bins should arrive in time for the next recycle day. If you are not inside of this boundary area, you are not a part of the pilot program, but will be included in the roll-out.

These bins are intended to hold all recyclable items listed on the lid of the can - which includes glass. The first collection with these 96-gallon green carts will be Tuesday, March 17th (B schedule).

Read more about the pilot program from the City of Houston's Automated Recycling Pilot Program website.
